This paper provides details of an interesting large ground improvement project where vibrated stone columns are being constructed through soft silts, clay, and organic soils and loose sand (sabkha), to support an embankment for an airport runway and taxiways. The objectives of the ground improvement are to improve the stability of the embankment, reduce long term settlement, to increase the rate of consolidation of fine grained soils, and to mitigate the risk of seismic induced liquefaction. The paper summarizes tests undertaken to demonstrate that performance requirements have been achieved, and presents details of the performance of a long term loading trial.
